Black Death Movie ReviewIf you haven’t heard of this movie, don’t worry you’re not the only one, I only recently found out about it after going to Blockbuster and seeing it there a couple days ago.
The story
Black Death takes place in the mid 1300’s in England (1348 according to the back of the DVD case) and is set during the first outbreak of the bubonic plague also known as the black death or black plague which killed anywhere from 30 to 60 percent of Europe’s population. In the story a band of knights led by Ulric (played by Sean Bean) enlists the help of a young monk to guide them to a remote village rumoured to not only be plague free but to have done so by turning their back on Christianity and embracing witchcraft, necromancy, and human sacrifice.
The stories main focus is on the age old Pagan vs. Christian concept. The difference is that the pagans aren’t all evil though they do kill several of the characters and perform strange twisted ceremonies. And the Christian knights are far from chivalrous, and more like sadistic thugs who seem to enjoy killing. One of the knights was even a torture specialist. At the end of the movie your not really sure who was essentially good or evil since both groups were a little of each, they all seem to wear several shades of grey.
Why you’ll like this movie
For starters even though Black Death wasn’t made on a big budget it doesn’t have that cheap straight to video feel that many others do. There are some good fight sconces and plenty of blood and gore for those blood thirsty types. There’s also a good deal of realism in the movie, the characters don’t look shiny clean, or even for the most part healthy. They have a dirty worn look to them which is what I imagine people would look like in the Middle Ages.
The other big plus is the characters themselves, even though most are relatively unknown they do a brilliant job of bringing something interesting to the story. There not just some copy and paste character that you don’t give a crap about, they have something to them that makes you want to know more and gets you into the story.
Why you won’t like this movie
First off this is not a movie that you would want to snuggle up on the couch and eat popcorn with your girlfriend; it’s a guy’s movie through and through. A good deal of blood, lots of gore and death, and about as far from a chick flick as you can get.
Overall this is a pretty decent movie and worth checking out, however if you don’t like movies that have a bit of gore in them, this won’t be for you.
